Signs you need heating — and what to do next

Knowing when your heating needs attention saves discomfort, prevents damage and keeps your home safe. This guide explains the common signs you need heating repair or replacement, practical checks you can do yourself, and the right time to call a Gas Safe engineer. Aspire Building & Property Services has been working across Gatwick and West Sussex for 40 years — we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern standards to get heating systems reliable again.

Common signs you need heating work

  • Cold or lukewarm radiators: If radiators stay cold despite the boiler running or heating being on, there may be trapped air, a failing pump, or sludge build-up in the system.
  • Uneven heating or cold spots: Rooms that never reach the same temperature as the rest of the house can indicate poor pipework, faulty thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) or inadequate system balancing.
  • Frequent boiler trips or error codes: Repeated lockouts, ignition faults or unexplained error messages are a sign the boiler needs attention — possibly an electrical fault, faulty sensor, or failing components.
  • Unusual noises: Banging, kettling, gurgling or clunking from the boiler or pipework often point to limescale, air in the system, or a failing pump.
  • Visible leaks or damp around boiler and pipework: Any sign of water should be treated as urgent — leaks damage finishes and can accelerate corrosion in the heating system.
  • Rising energy use or longer heat-up times: If your house takes longer to warm or feels colder than it used to, the system’s efficiency may have fallen; controls or the boiler itself could be underperforming.
  • Boiler age and reliability: Older boilers require more frequent repairs and may not meet current efficiency or safety standards. If your boiler is repeatedly breaking down, consider whether repair is still sensible.

Quick checks you can do now (safe, non-technical)

  • Check the thermostat and programmer: Ensure settings, time and temperature are correct. A mis-programmed thermostat is a surprisingly common reason for “no heating”.
  • Check boiler pressure: The boiler manual will show the normal pressure range. If pressure is low, re-pressurising may restore heating — only do this if you are comfortable and have the manual.
  • Bleed radiators: If the top of a radiator is cool and the bottom hot, a quick bleed with a radiator key can release trapped air and restore circulation. Have a cloth and bowl ready for any water.
  • Look for visible leaks: If you see water, turn off the boiler and the mains water to the system if you can, then call an engineer.
  • Reset the boiler: Follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure once; if faults persist, stop resetting and book a Gas Safe engineer.

Safety first: when to stop and call a professional

  • Smell of gas or pilot light out: Evacuate the property, do not use electrical switches or phones inside, and contact the emergency gas number immediately. Follow the gas emergency guidance for your area.
  • Persistent leaks, electrical issues, or gas-related faults: These require a registered engineer — all gas work on our team is completed by Gas Safe registered engineers.
  • If you’re unsure: When in doubt, book a diagnostic visit. Attempting complex repairs yourself risks injury and can invalidate warranties.

Repair, service or replace — how to decide

  • Start with a full service and safety check. A service finds faults before they fail and keeps manufacturer warranties valid — Aspire offers boiler servicing alongside our plumbing and heating work.
  • Consider age and repair frequency. Multiple callouts in a short period usually tip the balance towards replacement, rather than repeated part changes.
  • Look at system efficiency and future needs. If you’re planning an extension, open-plan conversion or want modern controls (smart thermostats, zoned heating), a system upgrade may be more cost-effective long term.
  • Check manufacturer support and parts. Aspire works with Worcester and Vaillant systems and can advise on genuine parts, available warranties and compatible upgrades.

Practical next steps

  1. Do the quick checks above (thermostat, pressure, bleed radiators).
  2. Book a service if your boiler hasn’t had one in the last 12 months or if you’re experiencing faults.
  3. For leaks, gas smells or persistent breakdowns, call a Gas Safe registered engineer immediately.
  4. If replacement seems likely, get a site visit and written recommendations so you can compare options and warranties.

Aspire provides both responsive emergency callouts and planned replacements across Gatwick, Crawley, Reigate and the surrounding towns. Our combined building and plumbing/heating teams mean we can coordinate upgrades alongside home refurbishments or new-build work.

If you need an urgent heating diagnosis or want advice on repair vs replacement, call our Gatwick office on 01342 545 065 or email info@aspirebuildingandproperty.co.uk. Our Gas Safe registered engineers and heating specialists can visit, carry out a safety check and recommend the right next steps for your property.
